Team Mopar Driver Johnson Competes in Dodge Viper Cup Event at Daytona
Team Mopar® NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson competed in the season-ending Dodge Viper Cup championship on Saturday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 23 at Daytona International Speedway, as a celebrity driver. Ben Keating and Kuno Wittmer split wins at the famed race course to wrap up the 10-race 2011 campaign.
Johnson took the wheel of a Mopar-powered Dodge Viper ACR-X owned by Cindi Lux for both races of the two-day weekend. The native of Greeneville, Tenn. finished second in the celebrity class in the opener and was 14th overall on the track in just his third-ever start on a road course.
In the finale, Johnson moved up a couple of spots and finished 12th overall. The second generation driver will shift his sights back to the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series this coming weekend, with a stop in Las Vegas for the penultimate event of the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
Keating was awarded the win in the opener, after his teammate Dominik Farnbacher was disqualified in post-race inspection. Farnbacher jumped to a quick lead at the start, but Keating closed in by the completion of the first lap one. The two drivers built a comfortable margin back to A.J. Morgan, who was closely pursued by Jeff Courtney, who finished third.
Kuno Wittmer emerged as the leader in the finale, following a wild first couple of laps that saw contact between several of the front runners, forcing a number of drivers to the pit area for repairs. Wittmer would hold off a late race charge by Craig Stanton to pick up with win, with Courtney in third.
Keating finished 15th, to wrap up the Dodge Viper Cup championship, after an early race pit stop to change a flat tire. For more information on the Dodge Viper Cup championship visit: http://www.viperheadquarters.com.
