Team Mopar® driver Allen Johnson piloted his NHRA Pro Stock Mopar Dodge Avenger to the No. 1 position in qualifying and advanced as far as the semifinals in the elimination rounds at the 30th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta (Ga.) Dragway on Sunday, May 16.

Johnson earned his eighth career No. 1 Qualifier Award with a 6.634-second pass at 208.23 mph in his Mopar HEMI®-powered Dodge. The Team Mopar veteran trailered Warren Johnson in the opening round with a 6.644/208.04 mark, then knocked off Warren’s son, Kurt Johnson, with a 6.660/207.94 pass, the fastest and quickest of the round.

In the semifinals Johnson was gunning to advance to his second career final-round appearance at Atlanta. It wasn’t to be, as the J&J Racing team owner and driver fell to Jeg Coughlin, who earned a slight advantage off the starting and posted a 6.657/207.50 run to Johnson’s losing 6.655/206.67 pass.

V. Gaines scored a first-round victory in own Mopar-powered Dodge Avenger before losing to Coughlin in the quarterfinals. Johnson remains second in the Pro Stock standings, with Gaines in the 16th spot. Next up for the Mopar-powered Pro Stock drivers is the 22nd annual NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, Kan., May 21-23. For more information on the NHRA, visit http://www.nhra.com.
