RM Auctions: “Stars & Stripes” Racing Corvette set for RM’s Monterey Auction Podium

By Auto News Log • July 5th, 2011

1969 Chevrolet BFG “Stars & Stripes” Factory L88 “ZL-1” Greenwood Racing Corvette

An American Corvette racing icon, this example was delivered new as a factory L88 Corvette before becoming one of three “Stars & Stripes” team cars sponsored by BF Goodrich (BFG) during the 1971-1973 seasons. Numbered #49, it was initially slated for promotional use by BFG, although quickly converted to racing specification and powered by one of the last Traco-built ZL-1 motors. Driven by top road course drivers of the period, including John Greenwood, Bob Johnson, Dick Smothers and Don Yenko, its initial major win was a first place in the GT class in 1972 at the Watkins Glen six-hour race. In 1973, the #49 “Stars & Stripes” BFG team car raced in the trifecta of FIA events: the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it set the GT speed record of 215 mph on the Mulsanne straight in qualifying.

The recipient of a concours-quality restoration in 2008, it has received a swag of awards over the past few years, including ‘Best in Class’ at The Quail in 2008 against a strong field of Sebring race cars, and the prestigious Amelia Award at the 2009 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, as well Bloomington Gold and NCRS.

Fully documented and accompanied by a complete ownership history, this iconic Corvette will be offered at RM’s Monterey sale on August 19, 2011, where it is expected to fetch between $750,000 – $950,000.

This 1969 Corvette was one of three team cars sponsored by BF Goodrich during the 1971 – 1973 seasons.
