Mopar-Powered Rookie Kearney Makes Drift Show at Road Atlanta
Formula DRIFT (FD) rookie Dean Kearney qualified for his second-straight event in his Mopar-powered Samuel Hübinette Racing (SHR) V-LEDS Dodge Motorsports Dodge Viper SRT10 at the FD Round Two event at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga., on May 6–7.
Kearney qualified No. 28 and exited in an opening-round tandem drift battle with No. 5 qualifier Tyler McQuarrie. Kearney’s team owner and teammate, two-time FD champ Samuel Hübinette, was unable to qualify his Mopar-powered Dodge Motorsports SHR Dodge Challenger due to mechanical issues.
“The car ran exceptional during testing and practice,” said Hübinette, who won the very first FD event, held at the Road Atlanta venue back in 2004. “The FD judges recognized me for having the cleanest drifting line in the practice prior to qualifying. We also posted some of the highest entry speeds overall, so obviously we know the SHR Dodge Challenger is up to the task. It’s really unfortunate we had issues right when we lined up for qualifying, because I felt very confident of a podium finish. But it was great seeing Dean make the show again, and to see how he’s competing right out of the gate with FD veterans. He’s a very talented driver and a great addition to the SHR team.
“The fans at Atlanta we’re awesome. They enjoyed the thrill rides sponsored by Dodge Motorsports, and I took four lucky fans along with me who won a ride in a 392 Dodge Challenger on the Road Atlanta drift course. Fans packed the Dodge Motorsports display all weekend and were very supportive of Team SHR. I’m positive you’ll see both SHR Dodge cars in the field at the next event in Palm Beach.”
Next up is the FD Round Three event at Palm Beach (Fla.) International Raceway, June 3–4. For more information on the FD series, visit http://www.formulad.com.
