Mopar’s Johnson Advances to Semis at NHRA Finals, Ends Season Sixth in Standings

Mopar® Dodge Avenger NHRA Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson advanced as far as the semifinals before losing to Jeg Coughlin at the season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif. on Sunday, Nov. 14. Johnson wrapped up his 15th season with Team Mopar by finishing sixth in the final NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock point standings.

Johnson, the No. 1 qualifier for the fourth straight event, had a little luck in his first round defeat of Bob Yonke. Johnson’s Dodge got severely loose, posting a 10.107-second elapsed time at 90.81 mph, but to his good fortune Yonke left the starting line early and red-lighted, giving Johnson the win.

It wasn’t luck but pure skill and talent that propelled Johnson past Greg Stanfield in the quarterfinals. Relegated to the inferior right lane, Johnson scorched the timing lights with a .003 reaction time coupled with a 6.592/210.08 run to notch the holeshot victory and overcome Stanfield’s 6.589/209.75 mark. Johnson, once again in the lackluster lane, red-lighted in an attempt to garner as much advantage as possible against Coughlin in the semis. Johnson notched a 6.632/210.31 pass to Coughlin’s 6.622/209.88 effort.

“All day I was just pushing it,” said Johnson. “I was really proud of my driving. That run (against Coughlin), the car just kept rolling when I staged, which is why I red-lighted, or I would have had another really good light. The car worked well, even out of the right lane.

“It’s been one of our best years,” added Johnson, who scored eight poles and four final-round appearances, both single-season career highs, and one victory, at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals. “We’re a solid team; we’re a championship-caliber team now, I feel. I know now we can be at that championship level.”

No. 2 qualifier V. Gaines powered his Mopar Dodge past Warren Johnson and Ronnie Humphrey before falling to Shane Gray. Mopar Pro Stocker Vinnie Deceglie red-lighted in a first-round loss to Humphrey.
