Mopar®-Powered Funny Car Driver Hagan Takes Runner-Up, Points Lead at Reading

By Auto News Log • October 13th, 2010

It was an almost perfect weekend for Mopar® HEMI®-powered Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car driver Matt Hagan at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals, held at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa. Hagan qualified No. 1, set another national elapsed-time record (4.011 seconds) and reached his fourth final round of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series on Sunday, Oct. 10.

Although unable to score his fourth victory of the year, Hagan did capture the top spot in the Countdown to the Championship point standings. He moved ahead of 14-time champion John Force in the rankings and, after Force exited in the opening round of eliminations, is now 64 points ahead, with two races remaining in the season.

The Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) driver defeated Phil Burkart with a 4.088-seconds lap at 302.08 mph, Tim Wilkerson with a 4.080/302.14, and Jim Head with a 4.118/300.26 run in the semifinals.

After Hagan and Cruz Pedregon took off at the starting lights in the final, Hagan’s Mopar-fueled Dodge unexpectedly experienced tire shake. He quickly pedaled it in an attempt to regain traction, but was unable to recover in time, ceding the victory to Pedregon.

DSR driver Jack Beckman piloted his Dodge Charger R/T as far as the quarterfinals and is currently third in the Countdown to the Championship standings. DSR team member Ron Capps (ninth in the playoff standings) fell in the first-round in his own Mopar Dodge.

Next up is the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Oct. 29–31. For more information, visit
