Mopar®-Powered Beckman is Runner-up at Concord, Jumps to Four Points from Lead

By Auto News Log • September 20th, 2010

Mopar®-powered Dodge Charger R/T driver Jack Beckman came within one round of taking over the points lead in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Funny Car class, but settled for second place and a runner-up finish to non-Countdown-contender Cruz Pedregon at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C. on Sunday, Sept. 19.

Beckman qualified No. 7 and en route to the final round defeated his fellow Mopar HEMI®-powered and Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) teammate Ron Capps in the opening stanza with a 4.232/302.01, Paul Lee with a 4.239/292.58, and Bob Tasca III with a 4.199/301.13. Pedregon, who qualified No. 1, posted a solid 4.171-second pass at 299.13 mph in the final to grab the victory over Beckman’s 4.212/301.81. Beckman came out of the ruckus just four points behind leader John Force, who exited in the opening round.

“We’re leaving here four points out of first place,” said Beckman. “If we keep progressing like this the rest of the year, that car will have a ‘1’ on it.”

The third DSR Dodge Charger R/T driver, Matt Hagan, exited in the quarterfinals, losing to Jeff Arend. Mopar-powered pilot Melanie Troxel was handed a first-round defeat by Tony Pedregon. Hagan is third in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs, 38 markers behind Beckman; Capps is seventh. Next up is the O’Reilly Auto Parts Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals in Dallas, Texas, Sept. 23–26. For more information on the NHRA, visit
