Mecum Auctions 2012 Spring Classic Spotlight: 1974 Streamlined Top Fuel Dragster (Lot S200)
Mecum Auctions 2012 Spring Classic Spotlight: 1974 Streamlined Top Fuel Dragster (Lot S200) – piloted and more famously crashed by NHRA drag racing legend “TV” Tommy Ivo.
Back in the Golden Age of major league Top Fuel racing, many of the greatest stars to ever thunder down the quarter-mile were products of Southern California. One of those stars was Tommy Ivo, truly an imaginative and innovative showman who had grown up in Los Angeles as a child actor, appearing in a number of motion pictures and network television series, earning him the nickname, “TV” Tommy Ivo.
Ivo was one of drag racing’s first touring professionals to recognize the value in showmanship, knowing that people who were buying the tickets which ultimately made his livelihood possible wanted to be entertained. His racecars were always fastidiously painted and detailed, his transporters were showpieces themselves, bearing large plate glass windows on each side, offering fans an unobstructed view of his fabulous race machines as he pulled into a scheduled event.
One of his most dramatic and unforgettable race machines is the streamlined Top Fuel Dragster sponsored by Honest Charley’s Speed Shop which Ivo built in 1973. In an era when Top Fuel competitors were afforded almost unlimited boundaries of creativity when designing and building their nitro-fueled hot rods, streamlining was one area of exploration which resulted in many dragsters tightly wrapped in wild, wind-cheating bodywork. Ivo’s “Honest Charley’s” dragster, designed by the legendary racecar constructor Nye Frank, was one of the most daring of its time, featuring fully-enclosed front wheel fairings and a scorching Lipstick Red paint job.
