Mecum Auctions 2012 Spring Classic Spotlight: 1963 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 (Lot S165)
Mecum Auctions 2012 Spring Classic Spotlight: 1963 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 (Lot S165) – piloted by the legendary Mickey Thompson at Bonneville.
Known as the Sears Allstate Tire Test Car, this 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was driven by Mickey Thompson at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1964. Serial number 6844, it is documented in Noland Adams’ “Corvette Restoration Guide” as the last Z06 in the third of six production runs, and is also listed in the Big Tank Survey and the Registry of Corvette Race Cars. After GM’s sudden withdrawal from racing in early 1963 the car was sold to Norm Burger, who raced it in Southern California in 1963 and 1964. In 1964 Burger loaned the car to Mickey Thompson for the tire test at Bonneville, where Thompson drove it to 158.45 MPH on Sears Allstate 6.70 x 15 Bias-Ply tires.
The Z06 was discovered in Southern California in the early 1980s by Mike Pillsbury, who also famously found Mickey Thompson’s Chevron Oil credit card in the driver’s door, where it had fallen during a gas stop Thompson made while driving the car from Las Vegas to Los Angeles; Thompson later personally recounted the story to Pillsbury.
The Sears Allstate Tire Test Z06 was accepted into the Bloomington Gold Special Collection in 1995 and the Chicago Chevy Vette Fest Ultimate Showcase in 1996. It received the NCRS Special Interest Award at Cypress Gardens Florida in 1997. It was then put on display at the National Corvette Museum for 18 months, during which it was shown at the NCRS National Meet in Collinsville, Illinois in July 1998, where it again won the Special Interest Award. The car has also appeared in over a dozen feature magazine articles.
