Jim Daniels Wins 10th Anniversary Mopar HEMI® Challenge

By Auto News Log • September 7th, 2010

Jim Daniels, of Bristol, Pa., won the 10th Anniversary Mopar HEMI Challenge Race Series event at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Friday, Sept. 3, in his Ray Barton Racing Engines 1968 Dodge Dart. Ray Barton’s son David, of Robesonia, Pa., was runner-up for the second year in a row in the event at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

Daniels won by a razor-thin .008-second margin, turning a 8.560-second elapsed time (ET) to Barton’s quicker 8.559. “The difference was in our reaction times,” said David Barton, who had a .027 mark off the starting line. Daniels’ .018-second reaction time (.000 is perfect) was just enough to earn him the victory.

Daniels waded through the field, turning consistent times against the competition, including an 8.561 against Jim Pancake of Delaware, Ohio, in the second round to go with his winning effort against Barton.

“This HEMI Challenge started badly for us,” said Daniels, who captured his fourth career Mopar HEMI Challenge trophy. “I missed the first qualifying session—and then I was slow in the next one. But it got a lot better today.”

The field was closely matched after perennial contender Charlie Westcott Jr., of Parma, Mich., exited the competition as a result of engine problems. Westcott Jr., winner of the first 2010 Mopar HEMI Challenge event at Bowling Green, Ky., had taken the top spot in qualifying with a dominant 8.413-second pass before retiring. His father, Charlie Westcott Sr., also withdrew with engine problems.

The Mopar HEMI Challenge Race Series made its debut back in 2001 at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The race series pits Super Stock/A HEMI (SS/AH) 1968 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas against each other in fierce quarter-mile competition.

The final event of the 2010 Mopar HEMI Challenge Race Series schedule will take place at the Jegs NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals, Sept. 25–27 at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio. For more info on the Mopar HEMI Challenge, visit http://www.moparspeed.com.
