GRAND-AM Road Racing: Bill Lester, Jordan Taylor Regain Points Lead in Tight GT Fight

By Auto News Log • August 22nd, 2011

There has been another change atop the leader board in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series’ production-based GT class. That’s the fifth lead change in the standings, in a year that has seen seven different cars win in the division.

After finishing second in Saturday’s Canadian Tire 200 at Watkins Glen International, Bill Lester and Jordan Taylor overcame a one-point deficit to regain the points lead in the battle which is expected to go down to the last lap of the season finale on Sept. 17 at Mid-Ohio.

With two races remaining, the drivers of the No. 88 Autohaus Motorsports Camaro lead with 272 points. Lester and Taylor won at Virginia International Raceway and led the standings earlier this season.

Seven points back with 265 points are Leh Keen and Andrew Davis, who have won two races this season in the No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

It’s more than a two-team race. Jonathan Bomarito and Sylvain Tremblay are third with 257 points, coming off a victory at New Jersey Motorsports and fourth-place finish at Watkins Glen International to close to within 15 points of the lead. They are the lone pairing of the top five in the standings who have yet to lead the championship this season.

Also continuing to gain are early season leaders Craig Stanton and John Potter with 253 points after a third-place finish in the No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche GT3. Paul Dalla Lana is fifth with 250 points.

Rolex 24 winners Steven Bertheau and Spencer Pumpelly scored their second GT victory of the season at Watkins Glen. Running a limited schedule in TRG’s No. 67 Sargent & Lundy Porsche GT3, they are well out of contention for the championship.

Davis has the best track record of the championship contenders at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He won there in 2008 and 2009 while finishing third last year, all co-driving with Robin Liddell for Stevenson Motorsports.
