Indianapolis-based EnerDel has been approved for $118 million in matching federal stimulus funding to begin a major expansion project.

The lithium-ion battery maker plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Hancock County. The company also expect to begin low-volume production for its first customer Think North America by the middle of this year.

Earlier this year, EnerDel announced plans to invest $237 million to lease and equip an existing building at Axcess70 near the Hancock-Marion County line.

It also has locations in Indianapolis and Noblesville. The Hancock County site will increase EnerDel’s Indiana work force to 1,400.
