Dodge Motorsports Notes & Quotes – Daytona 500 Final Qualifying

By Auto News Log • February 14th, 2011

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – KURT BUSCH (No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 11th

“It was a good, solid run for our Shell/Pennzoil Dodge in qualifying. We actually exceeded the lap time that we were going to run and that gives us great optimism knowing that this is our primary car with a better motor than what we had in the Shootout last night. Things are definitely thumbs up.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO FINALLY PULL INTO VICTORY LANE AT DAYTONA LAST NIGHT? “It was overwhelming. There’s no way to be prepared for it at any time. No matter what race it is, how big or how small, it’s just a special place to visit and I finally got to victory lane at Daytona. Incredible.”

WHAT THE PLAN THIS WEEK IN PREPARATION FOR THE 500? “We just need to continue to find speed as well as comfort in the car. It’s got to be fast, but it’s got to be comfortable when it’s in the bump draft. I’d like to make sure that we protect this car and get it all the way to the grid Sunday morning looking as fresh as it is now.”

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 24th
“It was a solid lap for the Miller Lite Dodge. Our lap was about two-tenths faster than we ran yesterday. Qualifying is pretty simple here. You just want to make sure that you point the car in the right direction and hold the steering wheel straight. I don’t think that we’ll make the front row by any means, but it was a nice pick up for us. I’m proud of my guys who have worked really hard all month to get these cars ready. We’re just anxious to get back and get racing.”

IS THERE ANY ADVANTAGE/DISADVANTAGE IN QUALIFYING FIRST? “Daytona has always been the same. The wind seems to pick up the later that we get into the day. It was pretty windy out there, but in general, it can be an advantage to qualify first here at Daytona.”

YOU AND KURT RAN REALLY FAST IN TANDEM AT THE JANUARY TEST. YOU WATCHED YOUR TEAMMATE WIN THE BUDWEISER SHOOTOUT LAST NIGHT. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS HEADING INTO THE DUELS ON THURSDAY? “Testing last month certainly helped Kurt last night. He drove and awesome race. Hopefully, I can pick his brain a bit about last night’s race. It was an awesome race to watch. He was fantastic in the draft and brought home the win for Penske and Dodge. It never hurts to work together and he’s one of the best in the business.”

ROBBY GORDON (No. 7 SPEED Energy Dodge Charger R/T) Qualified 41st
“Based on qualifying, we’re a little bit behind, but that doesn’t change our approach that we came here to win the race. We know that the Penske engines are strong and reliable. Kurt (Busch) won last night in the Shootout and his Dodge really looked strong in the draft. We’ll use practice this week to really shake down our SPEED Energy car and see where we were off today. It really doesn’t matter where you qualify; it’s about what position you put yourself in throughout the race to be there at end for a shot at the Daytona 500 win.”
