Ryan Hunter-Reay Takes Chevrolet to Victory Lane for Second Consecutive Race

NEWTON, Iowa – For the second consecutive race, Ryan Hunter-Reay took his No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda Andretti Autosport Chevrolet V-6 to victory lane in the IZOD IndyCar Series. And, for the second consecutive race, it was an all-Chevrolet podium with Marco Andretti powering the No. 26 Team RC Cola Andretti Autosport Chevrolet to the second finishing position and Tony Kanaan bringing home the third finishing position behind the wheel of the No. 11 GEICO/MOUSER Electronics KV Racing Technology Chevrolet.

The victory in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 at Iowa Speedway is the seventh career win for Hunter-Reay, and his second of the season. It is the sixth time in nine races the Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 has taken the trip to Victory Lane in the inaugural season of the Gold Bowtie’s return to IndyCar racing.

“Congratulations to Ryan Hunter-Reay and Andretti Autosport on their second consecutive IZOD IndyCar Series win!, said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series. “This is also the second straight race with an all-Chevrolet podium. The sweep was accomplished by strong drives from both Marco Andretti and Tony Kanaan; congratulations to both of them and their teams. The oval racing action under the lights at Iowa Speedway was a real nail biter right to the end. The drivers really had to take care of their cars to be strong through each entire stint.

“After this string of five consecutive race weekends, having a weekend off will give everyone the chance to recharge their batteries, and be well prepared for a return to road racing on the Streets of Toronto.”

The first nine laps of the race were run under caution, but starting from seventh on the grid, Hunter-Reay stayed near the front of the field the entire race, despite early-race contact with another car. He led twice for 15 of the 250-lap race. The race finished under caution due to a single-car incident on the 247th lap. With the victory, Hunter-Reay moved to second in the standings behind Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet who finished 23rd as the result of a two-car accident.

Chevrolet continues to lead the IndyCar Manufacturers’ standings with nine races in the record books.

Kanaan’s third-place run was his third podium of the season, while Andretti’s runner-up run marked his first podium finish of the season.

In total six Chevrolet drivers captured top-10 finishing positions. Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Penske Truck Rental Chevrolet, finished sixth followed by Rubens Barrichello, No. 8 BMC/Embrase KV Racing Technology Chevrolet, in the seventh position at the checkered flag. Ed Carpenter, No. 20 Fuzzy’s Premium Ultra Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet, took home the eighth finishing spot.

Next up is the Honda Indy Toronto on the Streets of Toronto, Canada on July 8th. The race is scheduled for 1:00 pm ET. Live coverage will be on ABC TV. “That was very challenging we were sliding around a little bit more today. I have to thank Marco (Andretti) they came here and tested. Marco put the set-up on this car when we came here. We tweaked it just a little bit from there we basically raced what he tested with. We got another win for Chevy, DHL and Sun Drop. Also, Marco and I raced really hard out there but really clean. It’s great to have a teammate like that. We are just so happy to be in victory lane twice in a row. TALK ABOUT THE PASS WITH SCOTT DIXON TO GET THE LEAD LATE: “I was really good on the high side just setting up traffic. I saw it coming as the tires wore off we were really strong just like at Milwaukee. A big testament to this team these guys do a very good job. We keep our heads the whole weekend and like I said Marco (Andretti) did an excellent job both on the track today and testing here. That is very important to come here with a good car like that.”

“Yeah, I wish we had some more one-mile ovals coming up. Those are fun. The racing that we’ve had on them that tonight seemed like it was pretty exciting. I can’t believe twice in a row this is so cool. This is a difference maker for sure.”

MICHAEL ANDRETTI, WINNING TEAM OWNER, NO. 28 TEAM DHL/SUN DROP CITRUS SODA ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET DRIVEN BY RYAN HUNTER-REAY: LAST WEEK YOU WERE THE RACE PROMOTER AND GOT A 1, 3 TEAM FINISH THIS IS JUST ABOUT AS GOOD I WOULD ASSUME: “It was real close. If James (Hinchcliffe) didn’t have his problem there I think we had a shot at a 1-2-3. We will take 1-2; the whole DHL/Sun Drop team did an awesome job again. Doing another win coming off of last week and Marco (Andretti) did a great job to come up with the RC Cola car. We are really happy. They all did a great job the whole crew. Marco (Andretti) did a great job and especially Ryan (Hunter-Reay). He drove a heck of a race.”

MARCO ANDRETTI, NO. 26 TEAM RC COLA ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET, FINISHED 2ND:First of all, great team effort. It’s definitely a credit to the team. It’s definitely a statement as well that Andretti Autosport is now the one to beat. Two-in-a-row for the team, two-in-a-row at Iowa. It’s a good day but for me I’m a little disappointed to come up short.”

TONY KANAAN, NO. 11 GEICO/MOUSER ELECTRONICS KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET, FINISHED 3RD: “It was a lot of fun. We are knocking on the door. We have to start a little bit further up. I know I enjoy it, and I know the fans enjoy it, but I’m tired of starting back there and having to pedal the whole race. Great job by the guys on the pit stops. I’m happy. It was as much fun as last year, maybe even better. This was the last layout track that we had to go to prove that this car is a success. I saw the fans, the way they were happy. Another finish…one-two-three Chevy, so I’m happy.”

HELIO CASTRONEVES, NO. 3 PENSKE TRUCK RENTAL CHEVROLET, FINISHED 6TH: “The Penske Truck Rental car ran out front it seems like the entire night. The positive is that we are moving up in the championship points and getting closer to my teammate. The downside is losing a race that we could have won. A lot of credit goes to my guys, they did a phenomenal job on pit stops all night long. Now it is on to Toronto and hopefully we can keep moving to the top.”

RUBENS BARRICHELLO, NO. 8 BMC/EMBRASE KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET, FINISHED 7TH: “I must say I am happy with this 7th place finish. I started the race on a completely different set up and for two stints my car was pretty loose. We managed not to lose a lap and once the car got better after the changes we made in the first two pit stops then I was able to race. It’s still such a different experience on this ovals but like I said I am pleased with the result.”

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET, FINISHED 8TH: “Another top ten and another race starting in the back and fighting our way forward. We lost a lap twice and got it back pretty late to make a charge. We made a bad call on the first wave around and I lost the lap again on a pit stop. We pitted too quickly before we packed up. But similar to Milwaukee (when he passed E.J. Viso on a restart), I was able to pass (Scott) Dixon on a restart and the yellow came out immediately. I was able to pack up and pick up a few more spots before the end. I think I’ve always gotten good restarts but never gotten praised for it like TK (Tony Kanaan) or (Tomas) Scheckter. I feels that is a strength of mine. When you get opportunities in a race you have to make the most of them. I thought I had better than Dixon and that was going to be my last chance to get a lap back. And we got a good break on the yellow. Happy to get another top-ten but I had to work much too hard for it. The Fuzzy’s car could have been a top-five car today.”


JAMES HINCHCLIFFE, NO. 27 GODADDY.COM ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET, FINISHED 17TH: NOTE – HINCHCLIFFE WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE CAR INCIDENT ON LAP 196, AND RETIRED FROM COMPETITION: WHAT HAPPENED? “Yeah on the restart there we had been under steering all night which is sort of the weird thing about it. We had put a little bit of wing in on the stop and I don’t know it’s just one of those things. Because of the dirty air there I think I was behind Ryan (Hunter-Reay) and maybe Katherine (Legge) was in front. The car had been running better on the bottom almost all night. I wasn’t able to run the high line like a lot of guys were. I sort of stuck it down there trying to follow Katherine through. It snapped once, snapped twice, almost caught it then it went around. It’s a kick in the pants this late in the race. The finishes that we have been having it really sucks. I feel bad for the GoDaddy guys. Obviously, the cars are running well. I think Marco (Andretti) has a good shot at winning this thing. I just feel bad for everybody on the team.”

(Watching the replay) “We went down the straight here, you see it too late but we were pitting that lap. We were coming in for tires and I think it’s a scenario where he (Josef Newgarden) is out there on stickers going about two seconds a lap quicker and we were going down the straight. I went low early in the straight to show him that I was giving him the high line and when we got there he just never lifted. He just came barreling in. It’s disappointing. My spotter didn’t have time to tell me that was where he was going. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. At start/finish I had gone low and he came from way too far back there. It’s too late in the corner to make a pass like that. It’s disappointing, but he’s a rookie and he will learn from it. It’s a shame because I think on fuel we were in position to win the thing. We had made the car handling a lot better from the start and I was looking forward to the finish.” YOUR STRATEGY WAS LOOKING PRETTY GOOD: “We were spot on. Roger (Penske) was making the moves and we made a gutsy call at the end of that last caution to come in and top off. We had more fuel than anyone. It’s really disappointing. It’s great to see all the fans stick around through the slight rain delay tonight. I love racing in Iowa. I just hate to finish this way.”

ORIOL SERVIA, NO. 22 PANTHER/DREYER & REINBOLD RACING CHEVROLET, FINISHED 21ST: NOTE – SERVIA SUFFERED A MECHANICAL ISSUE THAT SIDELINED IN ON LAP 99: WHAT HAPPENED? “Well, today was a disappointing day. Actually this is kind of the same thing that happened to me last year. In the last pit stop the valve in the fuel hose wouldn’t open and this year it wouldn’t close so the fuel kept flowing on the car and it created a fire and I think it burned something on the back. We had to stop because we were burning the engine basically. I’m really disappointed because we took a big gamble on the setup and the Sandvik Coromant car was awesome and I hate losing points like this.”

JR HILDEBRAND, NO. 4 NATIONAL GUARD PANTHER RACING CHEVROLET, FINISHED 22ND: NOTE – HILDEBRAND WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE-CAR ACCIDENT ON LAP 96, AND RETIRED FROM THE RACE: WHAT HAPPENED “I feel terrible for the entire National Guard and Hiring Our Heroes team right now, we had such a good car that I had everybody believing that with a couple of yellows we could get back on the lead lap and motor up to the front. The car was really that good. With (Ryan) Hunter-Reay I just washed up into this wake and had a huge run on him, and when you’re that close the car doesn’t turn as much as you want it to and I missed not hitting him by a couple inches. After that we were a few laps down, but man, we were hauling the mail and the National Guard Chevy was so fast. We’ve had a lot of bum luck this year, and the Panther guys have been doing great in the pits, but just haven’t been catching breaks, and to throw one away with a silly mistake on my part is really a bummer for the guys.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, FINISHED : NOTE – POWER WAS INVOLVED IN TWO-CAR INCIDENT ON LAP 68, AND RETIRED FROM THE RACE: ARE YOU OKAY?“Yeah I’m fine. It was a soft hit.” FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE WHAT HAPPENED? “I just lost it. I just lost it. I feel bad for EJ (Viso) because it took him with me. He said to me in the cars I was down low or something on him and I didn’t understand. (After watching the replay) Oh I see. I did not even get the call that he was underneath me so I feel, man I didn’t even know he was there I feel bad for him.”

E.J. VISO, NO. 5 CITGO/PDVSA KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET, FINISHED :NOTE – VISO WAS INVOLVED IN TWO-CAR INCIDENT ON LAP 68, AND RETIRED FROM THE RACE: HOW DID YOU SEE IT? IT LOOKED LIKE YOU WERE HOLDING YOUR LINE: “Will (Power) was definitely off the pace and he didn’t use his mirror. I just had a run on him. I was into corner one and he just blocked me. I couldn’t go any lower I already had my front left tire inside the apron under the yellow line. He just kept going lower and I had nowhere to go. This is not the usual Will (Power) that we used to know by being clean. This is the second race in a row that he affects somebody on my team. It is very disappointing, The CITGO | PDVSA – KV Racing crew gave me a great car. I feel that we could have won this race. It’s just a shame.”
