Chevrolet COPO Camaro Sale to Benefit American Heart Association
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Chevrolet is selling the final 2012 COPO Camaro production model at the annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction – one of only two convertibles among the 69 cars built in 2012. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the American Heart Association.
The charity sale is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, Jan. 19, and will be carried live on SPEED’s coverage of the Barrett-Jackson auction. Bids can be submitted in person at the auction or online at www.barrett-jackson.com.
“This sale gives the highest bidder the opportunity to buy a factory-assembled Camaro for drag racing – a truly unique piece of Chevrolet Performance history,” said Jim Campbell, General Motors U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.
The COPO Camaro convertible is powered by the COPO 327 engine featuring a 4.0L Whipple supercharger, for an NHRA-certified output of 550 horsepower. Other features:
- It’s the only ’12 COPO Camaro painted Inferno Orange Metallic – and features additional custom graphics and special interior trim
- It’s one of 69 COPO Camaro race cars built by Chevrolet for 2012 – and it’s car number 69 of the sequenced production matched to its engine
- It’s one of 20 cars built with the 327 engine and 4.0L supercharger
- It’s the only example built with a Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission.
The distinctive factory-built race car can be viewed at Chevrolet Performance’s large, interactive display at Barrett-Jackson, where technicians from the Chevrolet Performance Build Center demonstrate the assembly of supercharged LS9 crate engines.
Buying a 2013 COPO
Racing enthusiasts interested in more information on the COPO program – including registering interest in one of the 2013 COPO Camaros – can go to www.chevroletperformance.com to sign up for the COPO Camaro Mailing List.
All COPO Camaros are built by hand starting with hardware from the Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant that manufactures regular-production Camaros, including the same “body in white” body shells racers can purchase from Chevrolet Performance (part number 19243374) to build their own dedicated race car. Many fundamental components used to create the cars – including all of the hand-assembled racing engines – are available from Chevrolet Performance.
The parts are listed in a special COPO section of the new 2013 Chevrolet Performance catalog, which is available from Chevrolet dealers or as a free download at chevroletperformance.com.
Also available from Chevrolet Performance retailers is the “COPO Build Book,” which provides an overview of the cars’ assembly process.
Chevrolet Performance adds Camaro parts, E-ROD Crate Powertrain for 2013
Along with the COPO Camaro convertible, new race-ready, production-based Camaro parts as well as new crate powertrain and other crate engines and transmissions will be on display at Barrett-Jackson. They include the all-new EROD LS3 Connect & Cruise crate powertrain.
“Chevrolet Performance technical experts will be on hand throughout the week-long event to help answer tough tech questions,” said Campbell. “It’s a great opportunity to discuss your next project and get it insider tips on getting started right.”
Chevrolet Performance’s new Camaro parts are designed to help owners build more competitive cars with greater capabilities on road courses and autocross tracks. They include components from the high-performance Camaro ZL1 and the road racing-oriented Camaro SS 1LE package.
From the Camaro ZL1 comes huge stopping power with production-based kits, including racing-style front two-piece, 14.6-inch front rotors and six-piston Brembo calipers with aluminum housings (part number 22959672) and rear 14-inch rotors paired with four-piston aluminum calipers (part number 22989384) – all with the ZL1 logo. Also available is the complete rear driveline system, which includes a larger, stronger 9.9-inch cast iron differential housing, stronger axles, heavy-duty limited-slip differential and more (part number 22959394 for manuals and 22959395 for automatics).
From the production Camaro 1LE performance package, Chevrolet Performance offers a complete suspension kit, including larger-diameter stabilizer bars (part number 23102311), as well as its chassis-stiffening strut tower brace (part number 22756880), 3.91-ratio gear set (part number 22813040) and unique PCV valve (part number 12653073) that ensures oil separation and drain-back during high-load cornering.
E-ROD Connect & Cruise and more
Chevrolet Performance’s new E-ROD LS3 Connect & Cruise crate powertrain system delivers the emissions-compliant E-ROD LS3 engine package – with 430 horsepower – with 4L65-E four-speed transmission and all the necessary controllers.
Chevrolet Performance also offers the new 5.3L/4L65-E Connect & Cruise system. It’s the newest and most-affordable crate powertrain system, rated at 326 horsepower. Other Connect & Cruise systems include the Corvette-derived 430-hp LS3 paired with a 4L65-E four-speed transmission and the 556-hp supercharged LSA engine, which is matched with the 4L85-E transmission.
Also new for 2013 is Chevrolet Performance’s new LSX376-B15 crate engine, which is designed for forced induction. It features an all-forged rotating assembly that supports engines making up to 15 pounds of boost – and up to 1,000 horsepower. Engineers started with the LSX Bowtie standard-deck block, added a forged steel crankshaft, forged rods and forged pistons, then topped off the short-block assembly with high-flow, rectangular-port, six-bolt LSX LS3 heads to create an affordable foundation for supercharged and turbocharged combinations.
A more economical version dubbed LSX376-B8 is rated for eight pounds of boost and is designed for lower-output combinations.
