Drivers Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim combined for 142 points in first of two races

– Multi-car wreck reduces race to 23 laps

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Cadillac Racing is second among manufacturers after Johnny O’Connell finished fourth and teammate Andy Pilgrim placed 11th for a combined 142 points in the first World Challenge GT Series race at the Streets of St. Petersburg, FL.

It was Cadillac’s first race since 2007.

The second race of the doubleheader weekend is tomorrow at 4:30 pm.

“Overall, given our quick development time and consolidated testing schedule for our racing program, we’re really happy with the results for the first race of the season,” said Jim Vurpillat, Cadillac Global Marketing Manager. “We learned about how the car performs in actual race conditions. We’re excited about the second race tomorrow and our prospects for the Streets of Long Beach (Calf.) in April.”

O’Connell posted the sixth fastest lap at 1:17.293 on the 1.8 mile city course in the crowded World Challenge field, which included 49 cars in the GT, GTS and TC Series.

Pilgrim was right behind O’Connell with the seventh fastest lap at 1:17.374. Both drivers avoided a multi-car crash during Lap 5 that resulted in the race being run under the yellow caution flag for 30 minutes. In the World Challenge Series, races are either 34 laps or 50 minutes, whichever comes first. Only 23 laps were completed before time expired.

“There was just a ton of cars out there. It doesn’t take much for a guy to wreck,” O’Connell said. “Our objective was to finish this race with two cars running and get data. So in all aspects, mission accomplished.”

“We went out there and got some points,” said Pilgrim. “It was an unusual race with so many laps run under caution.”
